Live Animal Exhibit
The exhibit will be closed after December 30th, 2017. It will reopen Fall 2018 when our new Dinosaurs! and Animal Adventure exhibits are complete.
Open year-round, CSTL’s live animal exhibit offers visitors of all ages a unique opportunity to meet and encounter a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Visitors to the exhibit can expect a more intimate, family-oriented experience than most zoos, as they interact with chatty parrots, look eye to eye with alligators, pet dwarf goats, hoot at owls, and even gaze into the inner workings of a live honeybee hive. An outdoor butterfly garden gives visitors the opportunity to see hummingbirds and butterflies!
Fun for the entire family!
Parents can encourage their children’s curiosity of animals and the natural world, thereby inspiring the next generation of naturalists, wildlife biologists, and veterinarians. Together with a sprawling 17 acres of ponds, streams, forests and walking trails, CSTL’s live animal exhibit has become a popular weekend destination for families on Long Island. Be sure to visit CSTL’s calendar of events for upcoming family fun programs such as our “Creatures of the Night” hike or one of our “Behind the Scenes” workshops.
Educational opportunities for students learning about animals, nature, and the environment abound. For teachers planning class field trips to CSTL, the variety of live animals on display can be used to supplement New York State curricula and educational standards, and introduce students to such important topics relating to science and the natural world as:
- food webs
- animal adaptations
- endangered species
- climate change
- habitat destruction
