I would like to make my inaugural blog post to talk about why this competition was started, and why we feel it is so important to the future of our country. Right now, in the United States, we are going through a large deficit when it comes to available careers that are in the Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) arena versus the amount of college graduates choosing to gain a degree in a STEM field. Abroad, a lot of nations place a heavy emphasis on choosing a STEM based career, which in turn gives them a leg up in a quickly advancing world. If we as a nation are to remain competitive in the international scene, we are going to have to increase awareness of all the amazing opportunities that are available to young adults as they start to make their way in the world. It is the scientists, researchers, engineers and doctors that will create innovation, which is important now more than ever.
Neurological Surgery, P.C. understands all of these factors going on in 21st century America, and was a large reason Dr. Brisman initiated this opportunity for the Long Island region. The Center for Science Teaching & Learning has always had a strong focus on advancing scientific awareness, and so it was a natural fit for these two organizations to work together to create something new and unique. Both organizations are incredibly enthusiastic to have the ability to provide a platform for all the young minds out there. We hope you join us and make our goals your reality.
Long Island is a fertile area for innovation and scientific advance. We want to help each and every student realize their potential, and the NSPC Health Science Competition is a wonderful opportunity for students to test their abilities and push themselves past what they thought was previously possible. We hope to see many smiling and driven faces at our finals on May 30th next year.
